A ‘REELY’ BIG MOVE
Seasolve Marine Logistics (part of V.Ships Logistics) recently moved a very large winch cable from a suppliers’ factory in Italy to Rotterdam on behalf of V.Ships Offshore. The giant cable reel weighing in at 105 tonnes is destined for m/v OSA Sampson which is due alongside in Rotterdam in September 2010.
The services of a specialist heavy haulier were contracted to collect and transport it by road across Europe from Italy to The Netherlands passing through France, Luxembourg, and Belgium along the way. The route was mapped out and necessary permits were arranged with each country’s local authorities to move this overweight and oversized cargo by road. To minimize traffic disruption the cargo was only allowed to move at night.
There are always challenges with moving these shipments and this one proved to be no exception. During the transit part of the planned route, through the Mont Blanc tunnel, suffered a landslide due to road works which meant abandoning the route. To overcome this the cargo was taken to the nearest seaport, being Savona in Italy, and the reel, vehicle and driver were loaded on to a ship destined for Antwerp. Relevant additional permits were gained to truck the final part of the route from the Antwerp quay to the final holding point in Rotterdam.
This is another example highlighting how Seasolve Marine Logistics can successfully turn their hands to a wide range of shipment types - no matter what the challenges.
